About the Self Discovery Tapestry

How to use the SDT

The Self-Discovery Tapestry creates opportunities for therapists and clients to acknowledge and review the client’s life.

Using colored pens and recalling the past, the Tapestry invites individuals to “weave” their lives, disclosing continuous behaviors, important (critical) events, and future goals. Space to list those events, work history, and special interests is provided.

1. To begin, users draw horizontal lines corresponding with items listed on the left (lived with mother/stepmother, siblings ages, etc.) When changes occur (new schools or jobs, for example), change colors as well.

2. At the far right of the Tapestry, there is an area to note future activities and achievements, that is what you would like to see happen in the future with each of the items listed in the far left column.

3. After working your way down the left column, you can add vertical lines marking your age when an important event occurred, such as a wedding, birth, new career  or death. It is sometimes helpful to draw these lines in a darker color. Number each important event.
